He has saved us and called us with a holy calling… 2 Timothy 1:9 (HCSB)
Your Calling – The Moving Forward Series – Part 3
The pressure to make the right choice can be a paralyzing one, and can often delay our sense of “moving forward.”
How do we know which is the right path to take?
How do we know what to say yes to, and equally if not more important, what to say no to? Do we change course if it doesn’t seem to be working? But then, what does working look like?
We tend to talk about “calling” (vocation) as if it's something you pick up from the store. It’s easy, it’s right there… by the potato chips. And once you’ve found your calling, you’ve got it. Right? It’s got to be something that “lines up” with “God’s word,” and “advances the Kingdom?” (cos that makes it easier…)
We’ve over-spiritualized and oversimplified calling and destiny for a long time. It’s much more fluid and flexible than just figuring it out and staying on track.
“Calling” is the answer to the questions ‘Why am I here? How will my days impact the world?” It is the divine woven into our function and activity.
It’s integrated, not out there separate from yourself. It can morph and change and evolve over time. You might find yourself on an entirely different path in two years time from where you are today. Or, just further down the same route.
The problem is, what screws us up the most when it comes to calling and destiny, is the picture in our head of how it's supposed to be. And perhaps for younger generations, it’s not only the pictures in our heads but those on social media, too.
Here’s the thing: your calling is YOURS. What you do with your life is up to YOU.
Social Media isn’t fake, but it can be distorted. There’s a story behind every picture… secrets, unknown factors. It’s easy to judge yourself and your life up against a perfectly portrayed moment, witty one-liners, and creatively framed shots. But you have to ask yourself: what's behind the picture? Because there is always more to it than what you can read in a few paragraphs and what you see while scrolling. Don't let it dictate the validity of your work or the quality of your life.
But I digress. Your calling is yours. How do you find out what it is? How do you know if you’re going down the right path?
Often you don’t know until you try.
In his book “On Writing” Stephen King said that “The scariest moment is always before you start.”
So much anticipation, expectation, worry, hope, pain, fear, confidence, doubt… all of it.
But just start.
Begin with what you know. Put one foot in front of the other. Give something a go. You can always change course.
AW Tozer once said: “He (God) wills that we be as free as birds to soar and sing our Maker's praise without anxiety. God’s choice for us may not be only one but rather any one of a score of possible choices. The man or woman who is wholly and joyously surrendered to Christ can’t make a wrong choice – any choice will be the right one.”
