Before I shaped you in the womb, I knew all about you. Before you saw the light of day, I had holy plans for you: A prophet to the nations—that’s what I had in mind for you. Jeremiah 1:5 (MSG)

Holy plans.
God has them for us.
Apparently since before we ever saw the light of day.
There’s a lot of talk going around about how we must be “righteous.” Have we forgotten that WE ARE the righteousness of God? It’s him that makes us holy… And his motivation for doing so is pure LOVE and connection. It’s not a show of power or a manipulative move. He has made us righteous because He loves us and wants to share in the fullness of our lives mixed with his.
Holiness happens when we realize that God is here in the midst of us. Linked. Present. Entwined. Always has been, always will be.
In her book, “Grounded” Diana Butler Bass said:
“There is a pattern, of God all around us— a deeply spiritual theology that relates to contemporary concerns, provides meaning and hope for the future, and possesses surprisingly rich ties to wisdom from the past. And this revolution rests upon a simple insight: God is the ground, the grounding, that which grounds us. We experience this when we understand that soil is holy, water gives life, the sky opens the imagination, our roots matter, home is a divine place, and our lives are linked with our neighbors’ and with those around the globe. This world, not heaven, is the sacred stage of our times.” (Pg 25-26).
So, what are these Holy Plans God has for us?
Here’s a clue: Look within. Look around you. Look at what you already have.
How we move forward is not an obligation put on us, but a choice we make. We decide. The two (really three) greatest commandments point us in the right direction: Love God, love others, love you. It’s a dance.
Here’s another clue from Eph 2:7: “Throughout the coming ages we will be the visible display of the infinite, limitless riches of his grace and kindness, which was showered upon us in Jesus Christ.”
When we become aware to the zoetic holiness of the Divine, we don’t suddenly become the most well-behaved, perfect humans on the planet. But we are invited in to the holy dance of life, not as an observer, but an active participant.
No matter what you do, or where you end up, your “holy calling” remains:
Be your true self,
loved by God,
loving others.
When pondering your destiny, God’s plans for you life, your calling – however you describe it – don’t ask “what should I do? Should I be a preacher, a doctor, a designer, a builder, etc…” Begin by asking yourself, “WHO should I become? WHO have I been made to be?”
You might hear whispered back to you:
Someone who loves, forgives, encourages, endures, protects, comforts, is kind, heartfelt, determined, faithful, overcoming… builds meaning and hope, and so much more – reflecting the “infinite, limitless riches of his grace and kindness…”
From this holy and sacred place of love, we take faith-filled steps of grace down the path God leads us – the sacred stage of our times.
The longer I live, the more I experience, the more this “path” feels like a homecoming rather than a pioneering expedition.
Or maybe, it's both.
