Hey friend! I'm Liz

“Make friends with nobodies; don’t be the great somebody.”

Do you want to know what the Kingdom of Heaven is like?

It’s like a Landowner who hires workers in the morning, at lunch time, in the afternoon, and right before dinner when he probably didn’t need to. And when the bell rang? He paid everyone the same. The guys hired at 6am got mad even though they were paid what they were promised.

You see, the guys that got hired later? Even just one hour before the bell rang? They all got paid the same. The 6am-er’s confronted the Landowner and asked:
“What gives? I worked harder! It’s not fair. I deserve more.”
The Landowner replied:
“It’s not unfair. You agreed to this amount, and you got paid. What you’re offended by is my generosity. Because you can’t seem to understand that there are no lasts and firsts in the Kingdom of God, there’s just hunger and food, thirst and water; grace.”

If you haven’t read the whole series on the ‘Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard”, as told by Jesus, recorded by Matthew in chapter twenty of his book, take the time to check it out, mull it over, let the story sink deep into your bones.

How do we outwork this provocative parable in our lives?

Powerful, two minute reads that have helped change the script in thousands of people's lives.

Sunday Challenge: Wrestle this parable to the ground and see what's left standing. Do you get offended when generosity is pointed in another's direction? Are you playing the “team” game? The “earning and striving and achieving grace” game? Or are you just happy that everyone has enough to “eat?” Is this parable about eschatology or economics? Our perhaps, a generous mix of both?

On any given day, I find myself someone in the middle. Thankful beyond belief for the grace I’ve received; struggling to rejoice with those who I don’t think deserve it when they receive the same as me. But here’s where I’m going to start:

Bless your enemies; no cursing under your breath. Laugh with your happy friends when they’re happy; share tears when they’re down. Get along with each other; don’t be stuck-up. Make friends with nobodies; don’t be the great somebody.” Romans 12:15 (MSG).

Rejoice in the unfariness of it all.
