Learn the Unforced Rhythms – The Time Series – Part 7
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
Jesus, Matthew 11:28-30 (MSG)
Without trying to sound like a broken record, the ancient Hebrews viewed time more as a rhythm than a measurement of schedules and appointments. Their many feasts and festivals were not so much about “remembering” what God had done for them, then entering into a time of focus where they chose to experience it for themselves. It was a way to stitch the time together and participate, not just observe, in what The Divine had done and is doing still. And will continue to do.
God’s timing isn’t about getting the day and the hour and the seconds right. It’s about getting in sync with the Divine's beat, the rhythm; the time code of the music score of the life you were created to live.
I’m not sure that getting that carpark, or finding that thing on sale, or getting that job, etc… was all a part of “God’s perfect timing.” It doesn’t work that way. But being able to face your illness? Your fears and failures? Anxieties and worries? Being able to sit with the broken and listen, to say sorry, to ask for forgiveness; to live the joy and bliss of success all the way through and then venture courageously onto the next thing that has no guarantee of triumph?
To say to your life at any moment, no matter what is going on within you and around you:
HERE I AM!
That’s how you get the timing right. That’s how you learn the unforced rhythms of grace. It moves with you and your life.
You find it by opening your eyes and waking up. You find it by trusting Spirit. All in good time.
