For You are great and do wondrous things; You alone are God. Ps 86:10 (NKJV)

 Discover Wonder

“Wondrous” comes from the word “wonder.” As a verb, it means “to speculate curiously; be curious to know.” As a noun it means “something strange and surprising; a cause of astonishment, or admiration: a feeling of puzzled interest; a miraculous deed or event; remarkable phenomenon.”

God’s wondrous ways should cause us to be curious; they should lead to questions, to asking and seeking. They should send us on a quest to discover his depths of wisdom, knowledge and heart. It’s not something we observe – to gaze upon His wonder – but it calls us onward and into His purposes and essence.

Wonder is something we engage in and take part of.

When we experience something wonderful, astonishing and strange, it should lead us to ask why, where, what and how. It shouldn't stop us in our tracks, but inspire us to try and figure it out (for as long as we live). This is how we discover more of God (and more of anything). And the more we discover God, we find there is always more to discover.

Socrates said, “Wonder is the beginning of wisdom.”

Divine wonder is all around you. Can you see it?

The sun rises each morning with golden promises, the moon ascends in mystery and brilliance, trees generously offer their cool shade, rivers run wild and free, music and melodies reveal hidden realms, stories tingle the spine, warmth and heat, fresh and cold, kindness and compassion, a child’s laughter, a lover’s commitment, the strong arms of a father, strength in weakness, the power of family, kindred friendship, the birth of new life…

The love of God, threaded in and through all things, beckons to us, touching our hearts and encouraging us to keep on seeking, asking, knocking…

One morning, after a crazy night of searching for a room, ending up in a crowded, smelly stable, Mary gave birth to Wonder.

Jesus.

Don’t be frozen by the things you can’t explain, don't shrug off the abnormal and extraordinary. Peer into them. Seek Jesus in the midst of astonishment. As He leads you down the path of truth, your eyes will open more and more to wonder and wisdom.

Frederick Buechner writes,

Lord, catch me off guard today. Surprise me with some moment of beauty or pain. So that at least for the moment I may be startled into seeing that you are here in all your splendor, always and everywhere, barely hidden, beneath, beyond, within this life I breathe.
