The wicked earns deceptive wages, but he who sows righteousness gets a true reward. Proverbs 11:8 (NIV)
A True Reward – Proverb Ponderings – Part 3
Whether you believe that scripture is divine or not, the simple principle of sowing and reaping is obviously profound. We plant a seed, and it grows a tree; we encourage a child, and they believe they can do crazy things; we treat someone with respect, and the sentiment is returned.
What about those seasons of sowing, however, where we feel like we are far from reaping?
What about the times when we feel like everything is going to pot and the flowers don’t seem to want to bloom?
Wisdom says, “keep sowing.” Keep on, keeping on. Pull out the weeds, water the garden, don't give up.
“The sluggard does not plow after the autumn, so he begs during the harvest and has nothing.” Prov 20:4.
“He who sows iniquity will reap vanity, and the rod of his fury will perish.” Proverbs 22:8.
When I hear people talk about the same issues in their life over and over, I often think:
“You are reaping today what you sowed yesterday.”
We cannot keep doing the same things over and over and then complain about getting the same outcomes and disappointments over and over. We need to make wise choices to sow great seed in this season so that we can reap the benefit in seasons to come.
Do you want to write a book? Then what are you writing today?
Do you want a brilliant business in the future? Then what are you doing today to build your profile, skill, and opportunity?
Are you sowing a victim mentality, saying “It’s everyone else's fault!” Or are you taking the time to process what is happening in your days and owning your part in the process?
Are you sowing forgiveness? Or conflict?
Every day we are sowing seeds. Some will grow into beautiful, leafy trees. Others will turn into rotten, bad fruit.
If you don't like what you've been reaping, change what you've been sowing.
Wisdom says to plant good seeds of promise today. Then one day, we will be walking through a forest of greatness, amazed at our dreams that are coming to fruition right in front of us. We will look back and remember the days when we made hard decisions and sacrificed and planted those seeds.
“The wicked earns deceptive wages, but he who sows righteousness gets a true reward.” Proverbs 11:18.
Wisdom sows good seed and reaps great rewards. And learns the lesson when things don't grow like we had imagined.
