Psalm 45:1 (PT) says, “My heart is on fire, boiling over with passion. Bubbling up within me are these beautiful lyrics as a lovely poem to be sung for the King! Like a river bursting its banks, I’m overflowing with words, spilling out into this sacred story.”

Our stories are powerful. The way we tell them has great power still.

At the end of his life, David had lived through so much of everything. Perhaps out of all the men and women featured in the Bible, David lived the most varied life. He was a shepherd and a King, a rebel and a general, a soldier and usurper, a lover and an adulterer, a sinner and a saint, the glory of an empire and the stain of it also… Within the span of his life, he experienced the highest highs and the lowest lows.

He decided that his story would not exclude the bad and only highlight the good. No; he displayed the greatness and redemptive power of God in and through all that he suffered, perpetrated and achieved. David's final song ended with, “Great salvation he brings to his king and shows steadfast love to his anointed, to David and his offspring forever.” (Ps 18:50).

What would you write about your life right now? What are the things you would like to write about it or hope to one day write? What do you think God writes about you?

On this fine day, take the time to read over any devotions you may have missed this week. Last Friday, we looked at Proverbs 28:1. From Saturday to Thursday, we’ve wandered our way around 2 Samuel 22. And remember, you can always email us with any questions or comments – we’d love to hear from you! I’d love to hear some testimonies of how God has re-written your life as you have surrendered to him.

May you know and understand that your life and your story is a work of art and that God, the most prolific and miraculous author waits with a ready pen to write this life with you. Grace and peace friends.

And until tomorrow, here are a few quotes on the power of story.

No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world.” Robin Williams. (Dead Poets Society).

There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” Maya Angelou.

Life itself is the most wonderful fairytale of all.” Hans Christian Andersen.

The destiny of the world is determined less by the battles that are lost and won than by the stories it loves and believes in.” Harold Goddard.

My story is important not because it is mine, God knows, but because if I tell it anything like right, the chances are you will recognize that in many ways it is also yours… it is precisely through these stories in all their particularity, as I have long believed and often said, that God makes himself known to each of us more powerfully and personally. If this is true, it means that to lose track of our stories is to be profoundly impoverished not only humanly but also spiritually.” Frederick Buechner, Telling Secrets.
