But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities. Isaiah 53:5a (NKJV)

(Part 1 of 2)

You know when someone ‘takes the hit' for something you’ve done wrong, and it can make you feel so guilty that your focus lingers on your guilt instead of the gift that was given to you by your friend? We often do the same thing with our faith. We can focus so much on the ‘sin’ part of ‘forgiveness’ that we miss out on the wonderful blessing of being redeemed. It’s like being rescued from death and focusing on how foolish you were for getting in that situation in the first place, instead of being thankful for your rescuer, your rescue and the rest of your life yet to be lived.

We don’t need to feel guilty or ashamed that it was for our transgressions and iniquities that Jesus was wounded and bruised. It’s one thing to understand the transaction made, and another to be overwhelmed with wasteful guilt. He was wounded for our sins and bruised for our wrong doings because He loves us, and He wants us to be able to experience the freedom that only He can bring. His sacrifice for us was to put to death once and for all time guilt and shame. When you look at the cross, don’t see yourself as a horrible sinner who sent Jesus to His death, but rather see a beautiful, strong and amazing Saviour who loves you so fiercely, He has done and will do anything to bring you freedom. Have we all sinned? Absolutely – Romans 3:23 tells us that “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”… BUT it also says in Romans 8:38-39 “that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Don’t let your focus on the cross be around your sinful state, but rather on your Saviour and Healer who has redeemed you. And be thankful, not guilty, that He has lavished His love upon you in such a gracious, generous and eternal way. Bless you guys…
