I thank you, God, for making me so mysteriously complex! Everything you do is breathtaking. Psalm 139:14 (TPT)

Worthy of Self Love – The Receive Series – Part 5

In her book “The Gifts of Imperfection” (you guys, read this book!), Brené Brown said:

Until we can receive with an open heart, we're never really giving with an open heart. When we attach judgment to receiving help, we knowingly or unknowingly attach judgment to giving help.

When asked what the most important command in all the scripture was, Jesus replied:

Jesus said, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence.’ This is the most important, the first on any list. But there is a second to set alongside it: ‘Love others as well as you love yourself.’ These two commands are pegs; everything in God’s Law and the Prophets hangs from them.” (Matt 22:27-40 MSG).

We love to love others, and for others to see how we love others, and how much good our love for others does for others.

But love for self?

“Until we can receive with an open heart, we’re never really giving with an open heart.”

Friend, you are worthy of self-love. And you must learn to receive love from yourself. Love of God, others, and self is circular. You can never really tell where one ends and the other starts. They are connected, entwined, woven together. All you need is love because when you have love, and are in love, even with yourself, you’ll be able to do whatever you have to do no matter what it is. And no, that it is not a fluffy platitude. Read it again. And again. Until it sinks in.

When you love yourself, you’ll know what to do with your self. And ultimately, that will lead you to love others. And in loving others, you’ll find the Divine loving with you, in you, and, well, loving you. It happens in real time, on the go, as we journey.

I’ll say it again. You are worthy of self-love. And you won’t really be able to love well until you first learn how to love that complicated, messy, beautiful, unique mass of atoms and flesh and blood and spirit that is you. To quote a stupidly overused scripture: I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Which, in a not-so-stupidly-over-quoted-version says:

I thank you, God, for making me so mysteriously complex! Everything you do is breathtaking.” Ps 139:14 (TPT).

You are mysterious, you are breathtaking, you are complex, you are beautiful, you are worthy of love.

And you don’t have to work, prove, or even earn that love. It’s already yours.

All you have to do is receive it.

Even from yourself.
