Words with Friends

Can a word create something? God created the world with His words, or at least called into being the things He created with them…

I think about all the things that have been said to me over the years, good and bad. Some of the negative things spoken over me have produced a darkness that I have had to fight deep within my soul…They birthed issues of self-worth, body image and destiny… Some of the things that have been said to me have been full of fear, igniting dread in my heart, conjuring images that make me stay awake at night and close to my phone, ALWAYS. (Eek!). Things have been whispered to me with malice and gossip that have tainted the way I see people and situations…

But some of the things said over my life have been full of hope and love, light and joy. They’ve sparked dreams and visions, have awakened creativity, inspired me to step out and to keep on going. They have spurred me on to love my neighbour and stand up for the vulnerable, to tell the truth and live authentically. They've led me to Christ. Ignited my faith.

Words have had a powerful effect on my life.

Can a single word create?

What I do know is that words produce things. And here in Ephesians 4, Paul is urging us to spend our words well. The Message Bible reads,

“Watch the way you talk. Let nothing foul or dirty come out of your mouth. Say only what helps, each word a gift.”

If only we had the ability to imagine our words as beautifully wrapped gifts that we speak out for the hearer to open and find blessing within.

It doesn’t mean that all our words need to be fluffy and without depth. Truthful words may be hard to speak and hear, but if they lead to a place of healing and hope, if they help someone climb out of a pit or a trap… those words are gifts too. Just wrap them well.
