When I'm Weak – Prayer and Mystery Series – Part 7 - Pocket Fuel on 2 Corinthians 12:9

I will celebrate my weaknesses, for when I’m weak I sense more deeply the mighty power of Christ living in me. So I’m not defeated by my weakness, but delighted! 2 Corinthians 12:9 (TPT)

Jesse and I have been practicing a Digital Sabbath on the weekends. Today in our house, right this very minute, the phones are switched off, and our computers are sitting dormant on our desks. (OK, maybe not this day – but originally, in our App, this writing appeared on a Saturday.)

People have practiced Sabbath-keeping for thousands of years as a reminder that subduing the earth is not what it's all about.

BUT, here’s something to think about while reflecting on prayer and mystery:

It’s often suffering and challenges that shake us out of our perceived state of certainty and security, and plunges us into a shaken, out of control state. It’s in these times more than others that we ask the hard questions of God.

Like:

What?
Where?
When?
Why?

Paul said: “I will celebrate my weaknesses, for when I’m weak I sense more deeply the mighty power of Christ living in me. So I’m not defeated by my weakness, but delighted!” (2 Cor 12:9 TPT).

Maybe he wasn’t just talking about sin. Maybe it includes questions and doubts and failures.

God isn’t afraid of what you don’t know. He welcomes your weakness, your lack, your finiteness… it’s in those humble places and people that his grace blooms and grows. There’s beauty in the broken; it's the cracks that the light shines through. He can work with humility. Pride? Not so much.

Prayer opens us up to wonder, possibilities, and hope. It engages our faith. Not because we’re asking and demanding and petitioning God for “big things” for our “big lives.” But because God wonderfully beyond our understanding. And although we experience him and we know him, there will always be more to experience and more to know.

“Faith is a kind of knowing that doesn’t need to know and yet doesn’t dismiss knowledge either; a kind of knowing that doesn’t need to hold everything itself because, at a deeper level, it knows it is being held.” (Richard Rohr).

Stay open, wide-eyed with wonder. Stay humble.

Peace. Lizzy (and Jesse).
