“Incline my heart to Your testimonies, And not to covetousness.” Ps 119:36 (NKJV)

A testimony is a story: a tale of battles won, lessons learned, and wisdom bought with experience. Other translations use the word “laws, statutes, etc.” Jesus says in Matt 22 the greatest commandments are to love God, yourself and others. “All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” So the Testimony, the story, laws and commands all come to down to one thing: Love.

There are two testimonies that want to be yours.

One is the story of self. This is a tale of a wanton life, never filled, never satisfied, always wanting more and the ‘more’ always just out of reach. Selfishness is the drive and ‘now’ is its speed. Journey is not appreciated, successes are overrated and in-turn are unsatisfying, and failures and shames are hidden and kept secret. Covetousness is a merciless tormentor, he over-promises and under-delivers. The story he tells blinds people to the goodness that they have, the good in others and the blessing and simplicity of the journey. He enforces “you are not enough, and you don’t have enough.” Selfishness drives you to get what you can at the expense of others, even yourself – a life of compromise.

The second story, the testimony of God, is one of faith, hope and love. A story where you are valued and have a purpose. Love is fluid, not stationary. It values and compels. It heals to the point where you can walk and run into the plans of God. The narrative of this tale is faith-filled, always hoping and believing for a continuation of God's grace and guidance, rather than selfish gain at the expense of others. It’s an inclusive story that doesn’t skip over your heart, or ask you to do the same to others. It doesn’t shy away from failures or shame but deals with them through the cross and resurrection of Christ. A story of redemption, hope, purpose and life.

Don’t allow the pen of selfishness to graffiti your life. Reject its call and rip out its pages. And instead, allow the story of God to write all over you and fill your pages with hope.

“Incline my heart, Jesus, to your testimony of love, your story of grace, the colours of faith and your words of life. Make your story my own.”
