What sets your soul on fire and makes you come alive - Daily Devotional on Jeremiah 1:5

Before I shaped you in the womb, I knew all about you. Before you saw the light of day, I had holy plans for you: A prophet to the nations—that’s what I had in mind for you. Jeremiah 1:5 (MSG)

What sets your soul on fire and makes you come alive? – Part 2

“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”Howard Thurman.

What makes you come alive?
What sets your soul on fire? Lights up your eyes up with wonder? Makes your heart pound in your chest?

Before you or I had any material form, somehow we existed in the heart and imagination of God. By the time we were “knit together in our mother’s womb” as Psalm 139 so poetically describes, God wasn’t at a loss as to what to “put in us…” He wove things into your soul that he designed and purposed for you to have.

He said to Jeremiah,

“Before I shaped you in the womb, I knew all about you. Before you saw the light of day, I had holy plans for you: A prophet to the nations—that’s what I had in mind for you.” Jeremiah 1:5 (MSG)

The things that naturally excite you are hard wired into you for a reason. For me, a brilliant film, a beautiful novel, a well-told story – these things ignite my heart and makes my blood all warm and zingy. I just watched “Short Term 12” for the first time last night (why did it take me so long?!), and goodness me, that was a beautiful film. I could LIVE in a bookstore; I love being at home on my own; I know my overall purpose has something to do with stories – my loves and callings are linked. And within the pursuit of storytelling as my vocation, I experience lots of nuances and moments of purpose along the way, folded up into it.

Jesse (husband), is a deep thinker and a problem solver. He loves marketing, science, philosophy, psychology… oh and coffee! He speaks his computers language fluently (it makes no sense to me) and converses with new technology on a regular basis. It makes sense that he’s pursuing all those things as a vocation.

God put these loves and desires within us, and it's up to us to steward them, our ‘gifts,’ well. It’s our responsibility to pursue growth and maturity in our skills. We can sit around FOREVER waiting to hear a loud voice from the heavens declaring our calling, the exact steps to take and what decisions to make. OR we can step out in faith into the gifts divinely woven into us.

When trying to figure out what door to walk through to reach your purpose and destiny, knock on the door of the thing you love most first. The worst that can happen is that it will close. What next you say? Knock on the next door… and the next… and the next. Praying all the while, opening your life up to the Divine.

The only prerequisite for vocation is that you are loved by God. Click to Tweet

God has called you – the emphasis being on ‘YOU’. YOU matter. YOU have purpose. YOU have been called. Called meaning ‘being named by God and designed for meaningful living.'

God hasn’t ‘called’ you because you are strong, elite, eloquent, smart, handsome, pretty, come from good stock, got perfect grades… He called you because He loves you. The only prerequisite for vocation is that you are loved by God.

And YOU are.
