For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds… 2 Cor 10:4-5 (NKJV)
The word of God is referred to as a sword in Eph 6:17. Rev 12:11 says that we overcome evil by the blood of the lamb (Jesus sacrifice for us) and the word of our testimony – our story.
The word of God hosts a collection of incredible stories. One by one, under, in, through and around them all, they paint an incredible picture of humanity's relationship with God, and his relentless love for us. It’s messy, at some points weird and others horrific, but God is there in every page. Our own awareness and understanding of him grows with its telling and study. Then our story becomes part of its story and this mash up of the Divine and dust, supernatural and human, is our greatest “weapon” against evil, hopelessness, and fear.
It’s hope that there is more beyond ourselves. That when we run out, something and someone else picks up the rest.
Weapons are instruments and tools that when used with skill, can make a difference in a conflict, challenge or fight. For those who believe in God, we don’t have to rely on ‘worldly weapons' to help us overcome our battles. Things like manipulation, greed, withholding, hatred, inciting fear, domination, violence, abuse and more are fostered by a sin affected world and are not what we should pick up and wield in our hands when faced with opposition.
Our weapons are of a more divine nature. Faith, hope, and love. Pick these up, feel the weight of them in your hands and hearts. Get skilled in them. They can overcome even the most horrific challenges, break down walls of fear and hate, and pierce through to the very heart of a person. But instead of killing, it shows glimpses of the source of life.
What better way is faith, hope and love wielded than through our collective stories lived and told by grace.
Does prayer come into it? Yes. Does resisting evil play a part? Yes. But these in and of themselves are not the weapons. They strengthen our arms and hearts to hold and use our weapons properly and with precision.
Whatever you or those you love are facing today, face it with faith, hope and love. You may need prayer to help you, you may need to resist some pride and fear to focus, but they are the weapons, the instruments, the tools that will see you through.
