He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8 (NIV)

PART 3 – Walk Humbly

Go to PART 1  |  PART 2

A few days ago we looked at the Jewish custom of discipleship, ‘Rabbi Training’. After going through 4 rounds of education, the best of the best would be chosen to be a Rabbi’s disciple. He was to follow the Rabbi everywhere, not just learning but becoming his teachings and ways. They used to say somewhat of a benediction to a disciple: “May you be covered in the dust of your Rabbi.” It was a picture of their practical and spiritual journey… as they followed the Rabbi everywhere, closely, they would be covered in his dust, his anointing… they would take on His ways and wear them, become them.

Through Jesus, anyone can follow God. It’s not just for the elite or those who have proven themselves worthy.

In John 15:16 Jesus says, “You didn’t choose me, I chose you…” YOU are chosen, you are eligible! ALL are invited to be disciples, followers of God. Anyone can walk in His ways.

And it's with humility that we walk. When we follow God, that’s what we’re doing, following. We’re not striding out in front saying that we know better and can see more clearly. But we surrender not our individuality or initiative, but our pride that blinds us and trips us up.

We don’t lose ourselves by following him. God leads us and guides us to and through our purposes. Following him doesn’t diminish us, it enhances us. And in turn, his light within us grows. A divine partnership of creator and created showing each other off.

And make no mistake, humility IS strength. It gives room for wisdom to grow, it opens up opportunities for you to learn, and to hone or acquire new skills. It helps you stand boldly and confidently after you’ve fallen down and asked for a hand up. Humility opens you up to others, heightening your awareness of those around you and how we all need each other. And it's OK to need and to be needed – contribution. God created us for relationship. And community makes us strong.

Walk humbly with God. Follow him. Walk close enough so that his dust, his ways, truth, love and grace cover you from head to toe.

Do justly, love mercy, walk humbly with your God.
