God’s great mystery—Christ unveiled within you.

Colossians 2:2 (TPT)

Unexpected Mystery

WHAT ARE YOU DOING READING THIS TODAY? Haha!!

We hope and pray that you have had a lovely Christmas, and/or that you have spent whatever time you have with people you love and who love you. And although we would never consider reading our musings to be a waste of time, don’t spend too long here. Go and enjoy your friends and family and this wonderful day wherever you may be.

One of my favourite Podcasts, On Being hosted by Krista Tippett, had one of my favourite actors, from my favourite TV series (The West Wing), on as a guest last week. Martin Sheen. (Some of you may know him better as President Josiah Bartlett #bartlettforamerica – thank you for indulging me). What you may not know about him is that he has a deep faith in God and has been a social activist for many years, standing in the gap for the vulnerable and oppressed. I’d like to leave you with a quote from the interview that I think encapsulates the story of Jesus birth and its meaning for us today.

“The greatest mysteries are the simplest ones. Those are the ones that we confront every day. I had a conversation once with a priest — I was traveling and went to confession in this very remote place, and suddenly he said, ‘Well, we don’t know what God is, do we?' What it says is every time we try to identify God, we are sure to identify what she is certainly not. And the genius of God is that he dwells where we would least likely look, within the depths of our own being, our own shallowness, our own darkness, our own humanity.” Martin Sheen.

It’s something beautiful to think on, especially as we remember Christ being born into our dark world, in a shallow stable, to an ordinarily human and wonderful young girl. Jesus in the unexpected: the hope of his relentless presence and the wonder of his piercing grace.

“My prayer for all of you is that your hearts will be wrapped in the comfort of heaven and woven together into love’s fabric. The certainty of your faith will give you access a to all the riches of God as you experience the revelation of God’s great mystery—Christ unveiled within you.” Paul, Colossians 2:2.

Grace and Peace,

Lizzy (and Jesse)
