And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. John 8:32 (NLT)
There is a whole dialogue after this verse where Jesus talks back and forth with the people about who He is and who they are. A lot of religious people around the time of Jesus were ‘religious' because they were decedents of Abraham – it was a family thing, passed down generationally. But Jesus was introducing the thought that anyone could follow him, all they must do is believe. God is their father, not Abraham, and it's believing in Him and the one whom He sent (Jesus) that makes someone a child of God.
It’s funny how many traditions and ideas we hold onto, thinking that it is these things that bring us hope and freedom. We look to them for security and balance. But security and freedom are only found in Jesus. The truth is freeing, but it also comes with the responsibility of action. The truth will set you free from your past, from tradition, from labels and hurts, from guilt and shame, from the debt of sin – free to be who you were created to be in strength and confidence… Then once you know the truth, you have to do something with it.
Jesus says in Verse 31 “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings.” The truth about life and death, the truth about your heart and destiny can only be found in Jesus. The more you envelope your life in His word and ways; the more truth will be revealed to your heart. It’s not a buckling or limiting truth, but a truth that breaks the chains of sin and doubt from around your heart and mind and causes you to live big.
2 Cor 6:11-13 (The Message) “I can’t tell you how much I long for you to enter this wide-open, spacious life. We didn’t fence you in. The smallness you feel comes from within you. Your lives aren’t small, but you’re living them in a small way. I’m speaking as plainly as I can and with great affection. Open up your lives. Live openly and expansively!” Allow the truth – Jesus – to open up your heart and life and break you free from the restraints you feel are keeping you back from being all you are meant to be.
