Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Prov 3:5 (NLT)
TRUST means “reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety… of a person or thing” and a “confident expectation of something; hope”. Relationships work on trust – the exchange of assurance, loyalty and strength of one towards another. But if you’re like me, you’ve experienced the pain of broken trust, and the shame of breaking trust. And once trust is broken, it’s more challenging to engage in it again in both ways. In this place of paper thin trust, walls go up; we get guarded; we get jaded; we with-hold. Amongst my unchurched married friends (and lots of my ‘churched' friends), the talk is now that it’s almost a matter of ‘when’ partners will be unfaithful… Not if. Unrequited trust gains momentum and we live shrouded in suspicion and the expectation of hurt – it’s the result of sin seeping into humanity.
But there is hope for trust!
Is 28:16 in ‘The Message’ says “Watch closely. I’m laying a foundation in Zion, a solid granite foundation, squared and true. And this is the meaning of the stone: a trusting life won’t topple.” Proverbs urges us to trust GOD, not man, with all our heart because he knows that, unlike the experiences we have with each other, the Lord is supremely trustworthy. We never need be suspicious of Christ. He is our SURE foundation. Tested by a life of temptation and no sin, tried at the cross, and proven with His resurrection. Look to Jesus to fulfil the desire of trust in your heart. Trust in Him with all you’ve got. Then no matter what man does to you, your sense of trust cannot be moved. Your security, value and identity is not founded in how others treat you, but in the sure foundation of Jesus love – ‘On Christ the solid rock I stand'.
When we trust in Jesus more than anything, we can live in the very definition of trust: ‘a confident expectation of something; hope…' We need a revolution of trust in our society… And it starts by trusting in Jesus…
