Then call on me when you are in trouble, and I will rescue you, and you will give me glory. Ps 50:15 (NLT)

One night when I was a college student, living in Sydney Australia in a share house, hundreds of miles away from home and my boyfriend (who is now my husband), I heard a scratching sound at the window. I was home alone. It was 2am. Everything was black. The scratching was insistent. And I rang for help.

I was convinced that someone was going to break in, steal my things, hurt me (probably kill me), then leave without a trace.

So I called my boyfriend. I was in Sydney, he was in Wangaratta. 8 hours drive away.

It turned out that my intruder was a lonely, hungry possum.

I know.

The point is, in my distress I called the person I loved most in the world. (cute, hey…)

Call on me when you’re in trouble…

Spurgeon writes,

“Is this then true sacrifice? Is it an offering to ask an alms of heaven? It is even so. The King himself so regards it. For herein is faith manifested, herein is love proved, for in the hour of peril we fly to those we love. It seems a small thing to pray to God when we are distressed, yet is it a more acceptable worship than the mere heartless presentation of bullocks and goats.”

Who we call in our hour of need, distress, confusion, hopelessness… times that are sacred and vulnerable, tells an important part of a love story.

We can say we love God, we can go to church and offer lip service, sing the songs and say the prayers… But who we turn to in our most desperate hour reveals our deepest love and trust.

God desires for us to turn to Him: to love and trust Him enough that we would call out to him when in distress.

I’m sure Jesse (former boyfriend, now husband) was annoyed that I disturbed his sleep at 2am all because of a possum. But I called HIM. That’s something he smiles about.

…and I will rescue you, and you will give me glory.

There is nothing more revealing about God than our relationship with him in motion. The exchange of our love – ours of him, his of us – in action. Our trouble, distress, and heartache are not something to be ashamed of. It's a part of the story. One that reveals the most glorious side of him.

God is not ashamed of you, your trouble, your weakness, your heartache… he only longs for you to share them with Him. And no matter what happens from there, you are not alone.
