REFLECTION

Strength is a funny thing. Some of us feel like we have tonnes of it, some of us feel like we are inherently weak. But we are powerful and fragile all at the same time. Divine strength is woven into us, but often it's buried deep under layers of pride, insecurity and ignorance. It’s up to us to follow the spirit and find our strengths. And often the best place to look is smack bang in the middle of our weaknesses.

Helen Keller once said,

Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.

What comes first, the trial or the strength for the trial? Maybe they are not mutually exclusive. Perhaps, they are dance partners. As one advances, the other follows.

Yes, I believe that there is such a thing as supernatural strength. I have stories of times where I didn’t think I had any strength left, but for God within and around me; he gave me a gift of strength.

But more often than not, that gift has come through walking the trial out. I’ve unwrapped his gift day by day by waking up, putting one-foot in front of the other and facing my fears, challenges and heartaches head on. And usually, by the end of the “trial” I can’t tell where my strength ended, and God’s picked up. It all melts and mixes and morphs into one.

I have found that the more I’ve waited for strength to come to me, the longer I wait. Haha!! But when I step out, in faith no less, I’ve found the strength “to walk, not to stand still in terror, but to walk and make spiritual progress upon my high places of trouble, suffering, or responsibility!” As Hab 3:17 so aptly says.

To discover your strength, and that of God's at work within you, you must first ask yourself what it is that you want to overcome? Is it a person? A situation? A social issue? A personal battle? Figure this out and you will find strength's secret. Although here is a little hint: L O V E.

We rise by lifting others up.

May you, dear friend, find the strength that you need, within you, around you, and all the spaces in-between.
