**WE INTERRUPT THE WEAKER/STRONGER SERIES FOR A DIGITAL SABBATH**
As you may have read in the past weeks, we've been practicing a “Digital Sabbath” for one day over the weekend. During the week, we watch our kids watch us on our phones and computers. We’re always on them. And while it’s great to work and be productive, and to model that to our kids, we need time to rest and play (as do you). Time away from emails and messages and phones calls. No phones in our hands, computers switched off. We want to be present in the moment, rather than captivated by technology.
In his book, “Sabbath,” Abraham Joshua Heschel said:
“Six days a week we wrestle with the world, wringing profit from the earth; on the Sabbath, we especially care for the seed of eternity planted in the soul. The world has our hands, but our soul belongs to Someone Else. Six days a week we seek to dominate the world, on the seventh day we try to dominate the self.”
More and more these days I feel this inner need to defy the trends of the world that tell me I need more money to buy more stuff to be more happy.
In my house, there are three things worth more than anything else.
Three things of such high value, worth more than the money I earn in a week (make that a lifetime), more valuable than any item sitting in a cupboard or on a shelf, or anything that I could acquire in the future.
Yet these three things are often what I neglect when I’m tired, stressed, and my to-do lists are incomplete. It’s easy to let them fend for themselves… I can make up all kinds of excuses and reasons why I’m too busy and too important and too stressed to give them my full attention.
Why is it that sometimes it seems the things we value the most are the things we sacrifice the most? And the irony of it is, I tell myself that I’m working more and harder and longer to have more and leave more and be more for them than what I have been able to in the past and currently am.
There are four things in this house worth more than anything else it contains.
I’m included, too.
Because when I take a day out for them, my three loves, my husband and my two kids, it ultimately ends up being a day that brings me life as well (well, minus the tantrums… haha!). My soul needs rest, just as much as they need love. As I live out this love trinity – God, me and others – my spirit is refreshed and renewed.
It takes practice. It takes discipline. There're kinks to figure out, and we don’t always win. But we’re giving it a shot. Join us?
In the pursuit of all that you want in life, don’t forget that most likely, all that you want is probably just in the next room. Or down the hall, or around the corner. Friends and family. People.
