“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6 (NIV)
Jesus makes four extraordinary claims about himself in one sentence. It's powerful! Whenever you read this passage don't just skip over it but allow it to sink in and meditate on the depth of what Jesus is trying to convey here.
1) “I am the way” – When you become a Christian, it's said that you are “in The Way”. It's not meant to imply that you become a person who bothers others but it does mean that there's a direction we must go in. There are many paths we can take in this life, but there's only one way we should go.
2) “I am…the truth” – The first claim undergirds this claim. If Jesus claims to be the only way and all He said was built on a lie or un-truths, it would not sustain our travel along it (along “the way”). Nor would it echo into the following generations. Lies become too precarious, especially over time, and do not hold weight. 2000 years later and the Gospels are still some of the most undeniable and validated history documents ever! The truth that His overcoming power can change any life still holds fast today.
3) “I am…the life” Once again this preceding claim of “truth” reinforces this claim of “life”. When the fall of man gave us the knowledge of good and evil, a scale from good to bad, it placed a veil of judgment over our eyes. We judge others AND according to how “good or bad” we are, God judges us. But His original intention was that we eat from the Tree of Life – NOT the Judgment Tree. John 10:10 says He's come to give us life. John 3:17 says “God did not send Jesus to judge the world but that we might find salvation and be made safe and sound through Him” (AMP paraphrased) – sounds like life to me…and judgment sounds like a death sentence!
4) “No one comes to the Father except through me” – Jesus is the way to the Father who brings us into truth and gives us life. One way! Jesus! Love you guys…
