Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Ps 23:6 (NKJV)
PSALM 23 – DAY 6
This verse is the seal upon a powerful declaration. The final statement of faith summoning the journey forward.
Just like a prince or princess would never travel alone, but would have attendees with them at all times, when led by God, goodness and mercy will follow us – attend to us – as we journey through life.
In Spurgeon’s “Treasury of David”, he talks about how it’s God’s goodness that attends to our needs. God is kind and good. He cares for us and loves us deeply. Jer 29:11 says that he has nothing but “a future and a hope” for us. And it's the mercy of God that attends to our sin. It's His mercy towards us that caused the Father to send His only son to die on the cross and rise again, forever claiming us as His adopted children and calling us free and redeemed. He is merciful and faithful, and His justice is driven by His character.
We are His children. We do not travel through this life as slaves, or even servants, of God – but as His children. Family. Community. Servants and slaves do not dwell… but a son or daughter makes the house of God their home and lives within the word of God. A child draws on the inheritance – both in the seen and unseen – of their parents.
So as we journey through this wonderful, crazy, sometimes bizarre life, filled with ups and downs, goodness attends to our needs, mercy attends to our sins, and as a child who dwells within the home and words of a loving parent, we will inherit, both now and in eternity, the fulness of God.
Love you guys. Bless you.
(In studying for this series, we spent a lot of time reading Spurgeon’s exposition of Psalm 23. Thank you Charles Spurgeon for breathing new life into this amazing Psalm. Much of what we have written has been inspired by his words.)
