We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. Romans 5:3 (NLT)
I thought it'd be interesting to have a look at some synonyms for the word “endurance”: stamina – durability – patience and staying power. Endurance is defined as the capacity of something to last or to withstand wear and tear. But a varying definition of endurance is: as the fact or power of enduring an unpleasant or difficult process or situation without giving way.
We all want those attributes as a description of who we are as people right? Paul's letter to the Romans teaches us that it's by “problems and trials” that we garner those amazing attributes. When you look at someone and say “man they're strong!”, link they're strength to the thought that it comes from “running into problems and trials”. It doesn't come from lazy days at the beach, being waited on hand and foot, or laying on the lounge on a hot day with the aircon on full blast. No, it comes from trials, hardships and problems.
Health-consciousness these days is sky-rocketing. Going to the gym and exercising to stay healthy is becoming part of our everyday, normal lives. But what does “going to the gym” really look like, if we look closer? It's putting the physical body under strain and stress (problems and trials???) in order to make it stronger. Muscle grows when you tear it a little and let it grow back. So next time your facing a challenge at work, or your marriage or relationships are under pressure, take a moment and remind yourself “I'm at the spiritual and emotional gym. This is making me healthier and stronger!”. Ultimately allow it to drive you to God, who is your greatest strength.
Remember Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength”…yes you can! Much love guys…
