It is God who arms me with strength, And makes my way perfect. Ps 18:32 (NKJV)
Here are 2 ways God gives us strength:
1. When we were created, strength was one of the ingredients used. We were made by strength itself who placed the seeds of strength into our developing bodies. We have strength, and the potential of strength, hardwired into our makeup. Some of us have natural tendencies towards different strengths: academic, athletic, muscular, emotional, psychological, creative, relational… And no matter what area we are naturally strong in, in all areas, we can increase strength through repetition, exercise, practise… We can even build strength into the areas we are not naturally strong in.
Example: I have a weak lower back, always have, but it doesn’t need to stay that way. I can build strength into it through targeted exercise so that what was once weak, can now be strong and support my body. You have the ability to be strong and to cultivate strength. Circumstances come against us at times to try and convince us that we are inherently weak.
Don’t listen.
You have strength within you, you just might need to exercise it for it to come to the forefront.
God given, entrusted strength.
2. There is also the supernatural strength that comes from God as a gift when we need it. Miraculous times where things can’t be explained. A strength rises up within you, filling your weaknesses with boldness and causing you to overcome.
In both ways, inbuilt strength and the gift of strength, it all comes from God. He is strength. He armed David with it – supernaturally strengthening him in the midst of periled circumstances. And he made the way of David perfect. This is learned and built strength, the kind you get by living and practising and exercising and through wisdom.
If you need strength, ask God for it.
He may lead you to start exercising some of that strength He hardwired into you. Don’t resist the learning and exercising… it’s how strength is built and retained.
But at the same time, whatever you’re facing today, God will surround you with strength and supernaturally fill up your weakness with himself.
Charles Spurgeon in his ‘Treasury of David’ says,
“Then let us ascribe all the glory to Him who girt us with his own inexhaustible strength, that we might be unconquered in battle and unwearied in pilgrimage.”
