One thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Phil 3:13-14 (NLT)

Vocation – Part 6 – The Story of My Life

Go to PART 1  |  PART 2  |  PART 3  |  PART 4  |  PART 5

Being called is to be part of God's story – to be written into the expression of His divinity & holiness throughout the world.

What an incredible miracle. We are one with the most divine essence, the Creator, the beginning and end of it all, the God that is in and through all things, the author who breathed life into mankind and from the outset began to write an incredible story on the hearts of humanity and still writes today.

The story is not over.

Through it’s innumerable chapters and sacred passages, pages upon pages of words carrying the lives and experiences of humanity's encounter with God; love is its theme, grace is its rhythm, and the ink is the collision between the ordinary and the supernatural. Making it all extraordinary.

What will you write on your pages?

Here’s the thing about a story: There’s different chapters, different parts, often there’s a series of books, different locations, people come and go, there're twists and turns, they take time, there’s tragedy and hope, its unpredictable and you never wind up where you thought you would.

Paul's story is a great example of the nature of stories. He was born a Jew and was such a promising student, that he excelled in all of his studies to become one of the brightest “up and coming” stars among the Rabbi's and the Sanhedrin. He gave it all he had. He lived out what he thought was calling to the best of his ability. And then God poked a hole through his reality, collided with him on a dusty road to Damascus, and Paul’s plan changed. A new chapter started.

He worked through his past and didn’t allow those things to stop him from starting again, from changing paths. He went from being a “judger of souls” to a “proclaimer of life”. But in both vocations, he was a skilled teacher, an avid student (always learning) and dynamic communicator. His function just took on different forms as he experienced different things in life.

Your past doesn’t dictate your future, but you can learn from it, grow from it and change direction. Sometimes changing paths is part of the plan, so let God lead you and guide you down the different roads your life will take. In my teens, I thought I was going to be an actress. In my twenties, I thought I was going to be a preacher. Now in my thirties I’m a ‘wannabe’ writer… But through it all, God's plan for me is being outworked through the love I share with my friends, my family, my husband and my children. The function of my brain and body may change, but the pursuit to be and show love is what we should strain ahead for in all we do – it is heaven's call.

Don’t fear if the plan changes, if the road suddenly ends and a new path emerges. Function changes, skills grow and die and we learn new ones, opportunities come and go… but make love the constant plan of your days.
