So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free. John 8:36 (NLT)

A slave or free?

Jesus said to His followers (John 8:31-32) “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Some of them questioned this idea of being made free saying, “We have never been slaves to anyone…?”

At this time in history, Romans owned slaves. If the master of the house (the slave owner), fathered a child through a slave, that child remained a slave. However, the law was that when the father (master) died, his legitimate son or heir could deem the slave free because of their kinship through blood. This was a common practise and was called ‘The Adoption of Brethren.’

We are all sons of man (humanity), yet we all have eternity etched into hearts. We have inherited an attraction to sin through birth, yet there is a part of us all that feels called to more. You could say that we are born slaves, yet are sons and daughters of the King. This tension rages deep within the soul of humanity and Jesus was trying to show His followers that even though they may not be slaves to a Master, sin enslaves their lives on a daily basis.

Jesus had the authority of His living heavenly Father already bestowed upon Him. When He was crucified and resurrected three days later, He arose with that same authority extended towards us, freeing us from the legacy of sin and making us heirs of God alongside Himself.

Romans 8:15-17, “The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry out “Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ…”

If the Master’s Son set a slave free through ‘Adoption of the Brethren’, that man or woman was not considered a slave who earned or bought their freedom, but a noble and true son of the Master. Free not just on paper or deed, but truly free.

Jesus, through the authority given Him by His living father, redeems our legacy and calls us His own… free through and through.
