Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16 (M)

Just as salt has its many different uses and effects on things, so does light. Without getting into how it all works, sunlight causes plants to grow, regenerates Vitamin D in our bodies, causes eyes to see, warms the earth and much more. The sun doesn’t rise or set in an instant, but rather it rises graciously, shines strongly, then dips slowly behind the earth, not to disappear, but in order to rise once more.

Wherever God has placed you, be a light that rises over others, not harshly, but just as beautifully as the morning sun brings hope and a new day, shine out the love of God into others. And as the noonday sun causes growth and health in plant life, animals and our own bodies, allow the strength and kindness of God to cultivate health and vitality in those around you… Then just as the sun sets, showing off the beauty of Gods creation, not one sunset ever being the same, shine the different colours and facets of God’s grace and peace into the world around you. Don’t hide away or shrink back – rise in the strength God has given you through Jesus. It's His sacrifice, burial and resurrection that empowers that great light within you… It doesn't depend on you and your perfection but on the redemption and love that only He can bring.

2 Cor 4:6-7 says, “For God, who said, “Let there be light in the darkness,” has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ. We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.”

God has created you unique for a reason – no one can shine like you can… So shine forth, shine brightly and shine true…
