But you, God, shield me on all sides. You ground my feet, you lift my head high. Psalm 3:3 (NLT)
When you look into the context of this psalm, it becomes even more powerful. It was written by David late in life when he fled for his life from his son Absolom. The kingdom was divided; his leadership scattered… He couldn't be sure who was friend or foe, and his own son rose up against him, tried to kill him and take the kingdom from him. Talk about crazy hard times! But he trusted God to shield him on ALL sides – not just from public attack, or from the front or the back – but every angle, every area in his life, private and public – God was his shield. He was grounded in God, not in his great kingship or exploits, or popularity… But God grounded his feet… Making him balanced and sure-footed to face the situation. The shame and failure that David would have felt having his own son betray him could have easily overwhelmed him beyond return. But God lifted his head high, out of shame and failure. How amazing.
Whatever you face – trust God to shield you. He may not change the circumstance, but he will Guard your heart and shield it on all sides. Allow him to ground your feet in His great love, making you sure of your identity in him and enable you to walk out your calling. And lift up your head… Lift it up, don't be downcast any longer. God is your portion, your strength and your deliverer – you can hold your head high with all humility and assurance of your salvation. Enjoy this day friend. Peace.
