Then I heard the Lord asking, “Whom should I send as a messenger to this people? Who will go for us?” I said, “Here I am. Send me.” Isaiah 6:8 (NLT)

Isaiah was having a pretty serious vision when the Lord asked him this question. In this vision he saw the Lord in all His majesty and wonder – glorious and fierce. His first reaction was – “It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips. Yet I have seen the King, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.” (Isaiah 6:5).

How many of us have that same reaction when greatness is before us? Instead of feeling inspired and empowered, we often compare ourselves and feel intimated and small. Isaiah played the “I’m not worthy” card. Instead of agreeing with Isaiah, God sent an angel with a burning coal down to him who touched the coal to his lips saying “Now your guilt is removed, and your sins are forgiven.” Isaiah, in awe of what just happened to him – a sinner full of guilt declared whole and righteous by Almighty God – heard the call “Who can I send…?”

God asks the same question today… He doesn’t want to send out an army full of clones – all trained the same, all looking the same, all with the same skill set… He has created you with a unique purpose and destiny… At times I’ve felt the tug of God on my heart, I know you’ve felt it to – “Who can I send…?” Who can He send to the hurt, the doubting, the worrier, the abused and oppressed, the hopeless and indifferent… He doesn’t ask “who can I send” hoping to catch a few hearts to respond… He asks in such a way that we would respond without manipulation or coercion… a decision of our own hearts and minds to follow Jesus and go where He sends us. Having been justified and freed from the debt of our sin through Jesus, we can be His salt and light in the earth… spreading His love and hope with confidence that His resurrection power is at work within us.

Isaiah responded “Here I am, send me…” Just like Isaiah, you have been redeemed and justified, empowered to respond the same and be all God has created you to be.
