Ask me and I will tell you remarkable secrets you do not know about things to come. Jer 33:3 (NIV)

Jeremiah was already used to getting ‘secrets’ or the plans of God revealed to him in order to tell the people. He was a messenger, the spokesman, for both God and the Israelites. The middle man. Often the messages that God would ask him to deliver to the people were not easy to carry or pass on, and made him unpopular.

At the same time that God and Jeremiah were having this conversation, the Babylonians were at the gates of the city, ready to invade and conquer Jerusalem. The Israelites had walked away from God, and instead of living a life worshiping Him, they had turned aside to idols and the constant chase to fulfil their own selfishness. Jeremiah was the voice that warned them of the consequences of their choices. He was used to delivering and revealing the words of God and did so, no matter how much persecution he endured.

I can imagine the look on his face when God said to him, “ask me and I will tell you remarkable secrets…” He would have been like “isn’t that what we’ve been doing all this time God? I’ve been taking heat for this! I get it: you tell me, I tell them, they hate me…”

God was communicating two things here.

One: There was more to be revealed.
Even when something looks like it's over, when the end looks inevitable, when all hope is gone, God has more in store than we could ever hope for or imagine. This creative God of ours is full of remarkable ideas and plans and purposes and love and graces to work through our lives and bring about His goodness and glory. Jeremiah needed to know that even though he carried a hard message, there was hope on the other side of it. No matter what you’re hearing or experiencing, there is more to be revealed. Ask your questions, but then listen to His answers.

Two: This was a message for the people.
They didn’t have to rely on Jeremiah’s Prophetic ways to hear from God. They could pray themselves, they could hear from God themselves. They could have that same connection and relationship of conversation and intimacy themselves. While God does have individual plans for us all, He is not at ALL exclusive. There is no VIP secret club or green room in his family. EVERYONE can come into His presence, everyone can pray and everyone can hear what He answers them with. The Kingdom does not ride on title or rank, but on ears, eyes and hearts that lean in and pay attention. And anyone can do that.

You may feel insignificant or at the bottom end of the Christian food chain (what the heck is that anyway?!), but it’s not the truth. Open your heart to God, speak to him, pray and then LISTEN. He has secrets for you… secrets of hope and peace, of things to come and of His grace. The use of the word ’secrets’ is really just a way to communicate to you that what He has to tell you is intimate and personal.

Remarkable.

So get asking and start listening.
