You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavour, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. Matthew 5:13 (NKJV)
Salt is used is so many ways – from purifying metals and controlling yeast in bread, to curing and pickling meat and making textile dyes colour fast, to cleaning wounds and healing sores. I’m a ‘wannabe’ awesome cook… and I know that without proper seasoning, my food has a bland lacklustre to it. Salt brings out flavour, it encourages produce to be at its best… it seasons and flavours and makes food come alive.
It’s no wonder that Jesus in His famous ‘Sermon on the Mount’ would liken us to ‘salt’. And just as salt has its many different functions and uses, so do we, differing from one to another, function and move in different ways throughout our world. For salt to have its effect on things, it needs to be mixed in. Jesus isn’t saying here to preserve yourself, but is encouraging us to mix in, permeate, be kneaded into the lives of those around us in such a way that we bring flavour, seasoning, healing… life. When I’m cooking, you have to add just the right amount of salt – not too much or too little – for it to have its full effect. Stay close to Jesus and listen in to His voice to know what to say here and what to do there… He will always lead you and guide you. Don’t allow fear, hurt, worry, laziness, rejection, doubt etc to hold you back from others… Just as salt can be watered down too much and contaminated, these things will water down and contaminate your faith and the purpose of God in your life.
Stay true to who you are and what God has called you to do and allow Him to pour you out and knead you into the world around you. Some of you will bring healing, others flavour, another joy and peace… Whatever it is you bring, people need you and your uniqueness – the expression of God and His love at work within you is the greatest testimony of Jesus, those in your world will hear and see.
