Average means “typical, common, ordinary, normal.” There's a tension between ‘average’ and extraordinary. We spend so much time and energy trying to fit in and be normal, while at the same time we dream of being extraordinary and one of a kind.
I’ve tried hard to be normal… fit in with the ‘cool kids’. I’ve squashed characteristics that were uniquely me so I could be common enough to blend in with the acceptable and typical. And yet I wanted to be noticed. Valued. I hoped someone would spy out my true self buried underneath all that normal ordinariness, and see my hidden beauty.
Problem – How could anyone see the gold I had buried deep within, when I had covered it with a thick coat of ‘averageness.’
This happens everywhere. Schools, homes, marriages, churches, teams, workplaces, gyms, beaches, parks… they’ve all witnessed the tension between average and amazing. They’ve watched as we carefully cover up our true selves, shroud our uniqueness in shame, and follow the way of conformity. Conformity demands we bow to the mundane and common, denying ourselves the right to diversity, beauty and purpose.
Take AW Tozer's advice. When ‘average’ wants your loyalty, refuse to give it. Don’t walk with the crowd, say ‘goodbye' to common living. Embrace the uniqueness that God created skilfully, thoughtfully and deliberately within you. Allow your heart to soar to its full potential and beyond, rather than keeping it weighed down by the typical and ordinary.
Matt 5:14-16 (MSG) says
“You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world… Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God…”
When you allow your uniqueness to shine through the ordinary, to display the colours and hues of Gods love and grace they way they reflect uniquely in you, God is seen as He so desires to be. As we let average drip of us like water allowing our true selves to shine bright, together we paint a colourful portrait of God’s love on the world around us.
Normalcy dulls our shine.
So open your heart and refuse to be average.
