I’m putting my rainbow in the clouds, a sign of the covenant between me and the Earth. From now on, when I form a cloud over the Earth and the rainbow appears in the cloud, I’ll remember my covenant between me and you and everything living, that never again will floodwaters destroy all life. (Gen 9:13-14)
The rainbow was God’s promise, first to Noah, but ultimately to humanity that He would not cause the destruction of all life on earth through a flood again. I can’t imagine the tension Noah must have felt in building the ark. “Am I crazy?” he must’ve asked himself on many occasions. Then when the destructive waters came, his heart would have been aching for the lives that were lost.
What I love about God is that we see His redemptive qualities shine through the promise He makes. It’s like He’s saying “no matter how messed up things get, I’m gonna figure out another way to redeem the earth”. We all know that He did find another way… our strong and precious Jesus! Now when we look at a rainbow it can actually remind us of the redemptive plan God came up with to rescue humanity from the self-destructive power of sin. When we look at a rainbow now it can remind us of an empty cross. A spotless lamb. A resurrected Christ. An eternal Saviour. Jesus.
Next time you see one let it point you to Jesus and remind you of God’s great plan for humanity…
