Daily Brew – Part 1 – A Question of Origins
As some of you may know, I’m fortunate enough to work for a Specialty Coffee Roaster here in Australia called ‘Glee Coffee Roasters’ – named after two brother Ben and Chris Gleeson. I love and am super-passionate about coffee and the fine art of roasting and brewing it well. Some are not averse to calling me a “coffee snob” and I’m OK with that…
In Specialty Coffee land, we make up blends of beans from different origins. Great coffee, namely the species called Arabica, comes from different parts of the world, typically referred to as origins. As a roaster we take origins from places like Mexico, Kenya, Ethiopia, Papua New Guinea, Brazil, Guatemala, Costa Rica etc, and blend them together so that when the coffee is made it has a well balanced and rounded flavour. Without the diversity and unique flavour of origins, we couldn’t create a blend that is harmonious in both milk or black coffees.
Each origin has its own unique flavour profile which is determined by the soil it grows in and the process it undergoes after harvest.
For example, a dry process coffee takes weeks for the fruit to ferment off the coffee bean, however the fermentation process packs powerful flavours into the bean. The alternative, wet process, happens much faster, just a few days. Although the fruit doesn’t seep its flavour into the bean as much, the unripe fruit are easy to separate making this process more consistent.
In the Body of Christ, we all come from different backgrounds (origins) and different ways of doing things (processes.) Some have a more obvious and powerful influence over their communities while others gently seep in. Neither is right or wrong but each brings its own unique flavour of Christ to the world and together they all make a beautiful and well-rounded blend.
As you go into the world today, remember it’s made up of all kinds… and it takes all kinds to lead others to a meaningful life that's found in a relationship with God.
