The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Ps 19:1 (NIV)
CS Lewis says of Psalm 19 “take this to be the greatest poem in The Psalms and one of the greatest lyrics in the world.”
David wrote this Psalm (incredible poem) to be sung for worship when the people gathered to sacrifice to and honour God. CH Spurgeon says of David, “In his earliest days, while keeping his father’s flock, [David] had devoted himself to the study of God’s two great books—nature and Scripture; and he had so thoroughly entered into the spirit of these two only volumes in his library that he was able with a devout criticism to compare and contrast them, magnifying the excellency of the Author as seen in both. He [you, me, all] is wisest who reads both the world-book, and the Word-book as two volumes of the same work, and feels concerning them, “My Father wrote them both.”
Have you ever looked up into the sky at night and felt wonder and glory fall from the heavens like rains drops that soak your heart in mystery and awe? Heard the beautiful song of a starry sky or the declarations of the sun?
God is in and through all things. Before He delicately created Adam, He forged the earth and sky, the seas and forests, all living creatures… He made them all. Everything created has His mark within. Just as He created all of humanity and within every human heart is the seed of eternity, His essence echoes through all creation. And when you listen, not with your ears per-say, but with faith, you can hear it proclaim His goodness and grace.
The ground you walk on isn’t just dirt, the water you drink isn’t just liquid, the sky of full stars isn’t just a blackness and light – it’s all an expression of God’s wonder and grace, power and love… Like Spurgeon says of David, understand that God is divinely linked to both the scriptures and the world around you. Don’t pass up one for the other, but see GOD in His fullness reflected through both.
Tonight, instead of turning on the TV, or being busy underneath a roof, step outside and behold the wonder of the night sky and listen to it “proclaim the work of His hands…”
