Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart. Col 4:2 (NLT)

Prayer Is

There are some words we use so frequently that they have become part of the furniture of life… familiarity sticks to them like a regular sunrise and we stop paying attention to its detail.

Prayer is one of those words. We use it all the time; we do it all the time (right?), we hear it talked about it all the time. It's everywhere and just seems to blend into the background.

Prayer is simply talking to God, right?

Sure. But it’s more than that. Through familiarity and the attempt to make the concept of prayer relatable and accessible, we have ground it down to this definition. It’s like letting a beautiful fresh herb full of colour and flavour and life, dry out in a musty dark room, then grinding it down, down, down until it becomes a fine powder that only has a hint of its original taste and none of its former beauty.

The word used for prayer here is “Proseuche” and it means “to address God” in a set apart place. It’s not just what you do, but the space that prayer occupies in our lives.  It is to acknowledge the supernatural undertones of all that is. It’s where the natural and the divine meet. How do you address God with your life? How much space in your life does God occupy?

Intensity often prompts prayer. Moments of great struggle, confusion, heartache, questions, joy and resonance, wonder, strange coincidences and phenomenons, uncertainties all seem to compel us to open our hearts, minds and lives up to God. We can’t help but pray, reach out, be aware, speak to, take hold of, question and seek God in the moments of life that kick and wail and tear and jump and remind us that we are human.

We don’t pray ritualistically, we no longer need dedicated services, places and times to pray. Jesus has made a way for our whole lives to be a prayer, devoted and connected to the divine, God himself, the creator and keeper of all things.

Prayer is devoting yourself to the awareness of him, to the connection and flow of life between you and God. Bring your mind and your heart with you. Ask your questions, talk about your science, BE AUTHENTIC, TRUE AND HONEST. Be alert and aware that everything happening around you is permeated with His unfolding grace. And if that's the case, surround your ‘prayers' with thankfulness. It keeps your heart soft and you balanced in the ever-changing temperature of life.

Benediction:

May you wake up and see God in the every day, the moments that stun you and the ones that float by on comfortable winds. May you ask God “what are you doing, and how can I be a part of it.”
