Pay It Forward, Pass It On

You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others. 2 Tim 2:2 (NLT)

This is the quintessential discipleship verse. It shows us the pattern for teaching people about God and is essentially how and why you, and all of us, came to hear the Good News! It outlines how four generations of people will hear the Gospel.

1-2) “You have heard me…” We learn by hearing from others. Not just hearing, but watching and observing too. What we know has always come from a source, compelled by passion and zeal to ensure that more people know about Jesus.

2-3) “Teach these truths to other trustworthy people…” – The hope dwindles if we don't share it and pass it on. It's like the concept of “Pay It Forward”. As you get blessed you pass the blessing onto someone who hasn't heard it before. This is how the Gospel spreads. Not so that we have more seats filled in churches, but so people's lives are actually transformed!

3-4) “…who are able to pass them onto others” – It's the apprenticeship model. Whenever you do something and you're about to exert your expertise, make sure someone less skilled is on the journey with you. Explain what you do and why you do it. It may take a little longer but that skill will outlast your lifetime.

Never under estimate the power of your experience to help the next generation make smarter and wiser decisions, faster. Jesus says in John 14:12 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works…” Each one of us should die empty and exhausted of all that we have learned in this life, otherwise we take a treasure chest full of gold to our grave.

Think today, about who you can impart into and start the process with now…it'll mean you'll leave a legacy long beyond your years!
