Jesus told a parable about a merchant who was seeking pearls to sell, and along the way found this one great pearl that changed the way he saw the world. Instead of leaving it behind and continuing his quest, he did something unexpected – he sold everything he had and bought the pearl. He abandoned his life as a merchant. You can’t be a merchant if you have nothing to trade. When he sold everything he had and he bought that pearl, everything changed. He was willing to shed the merchant to become the pearl owner. In Matthew 13:45, at the start of the parable, Jesus said that this is what the Kingdom of God is like.

Earlier, he told a group of people during one of his more famous talks that they should “Seek first the Kingdom of God…”

The Passion Translation says,

“So above all, constantly chase after the realm of God’s kingdom and the righteousness that proceeds from him. Then all these less important things will be given to you abundantly.” Matthew 6:33

Perhaps if the Kingdom of God is something that we should seek above all else, and if that Kingdom is like a merchant who took on a new identity to obtain his passion, then seeking the kingdom of God is actively seeking your unique path/passion/destiny in the world.

And that is no small or silly thing. There’s been a glitch in our culture as far as our passions are concerned. Your passion, my passion is so tightly interwoven with our reason for being. For too long they have been treated like luxuries we can enjoy after we’ve gotten all the “important things” done. The only thing is, I think we’ve lost sight of what is important.

Matthew 6:32-34 says, “So then, forsake your worries! Why would you say, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ ‘What will we wear?’ For that is what the unbelievers chase after. Doesn’t your heavenly Father already know the things your bodies require? So above all, constantly chase after the realm of God’s kingdom and the righteousness that proceeds from him. Then all these less important things will be given to you abundantly. Refuse to worry about tomorrow, but deal with each challenge that comes your way, one day at a time. Tomorrow will take care of itself.

He’s not saying that clothing ourselves and our families, and putting food on the table is a useless endeavour or worry. We all need clothes, we all need food. But we’ve created this society where we work, buy insurance, wash our cars on the weekends, increase our house loans so we can buy bigger houses, we spend and earn, and spend and earn, so much so that we work ourselves into a seemingly never-ending cycle of earning to spend. Meanwhile, never really living. Money and things become our master, and if we’re not careful, we’ll end up in a job we don’t like to pay for things we think we need that we're only filling the emptiness in our hearts created by our dead dreams and lost hopes.

But what if we REFUSED to worry about tomorrow? What if we unplugged from the system? What if we started to believe that what really keeps us living is not only the food on the table and the roof over our heads, but also the passion in our blood and the fire in our bellies to be and do all that we have within us to do?

What if we believed that what keeps us alive is the passion in our blood and the fire in our bellies? Click to Tweet

What if we reframed what was important?
