Pages in the Book of Life - Pocket Fuel Daily Devotional on Phil 3:13

One thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Phil 3:13-14 (NLT)

Our lives are being written into the expression of God's divinity, holiness, and grace throughout the world. Our destiny is just the color of the ink he uses; it's the brush strokes, the handwriting… the unique texture and mark that only our individual lives can leave on the pages of existence.

We are one with the most divine essence, the Creator, the beginning and end of it all, the God that is in and through all things; the author who penned humanity into life with his breath and from the outset began writing a miraculous story on the hearts of humanity, who still writes today…

The story is not over.

God’s book of life (if you will) is filled with numerous chapters and sacred passages; pages upon pages of words carrying the lives and experiences of humanity’s encounter with himself. Love is its theme, grace is its rhythm, we are the ink, and through it all, it tells of the collision between the ordinary and the supernatural. Making it ALL extraordinary.

What will you write on its pages?

Here’s the thing about a story: There're different chapters and parts. Often, stories are written in a series of books, set in different locations, where people come and go. There are twists and turns, ups and downs, tragedies and triumphs. A good story is largely unpredictable; you never end up where you thought you would.

Paul’s life is an excellent example of this. Born a Jew AND a Roman, he was a promising student, and excelled in all of his studies to become one of the brightest “up and coming” stars amongst the Rabbis, Sanhedrin, and Pharisees. Before his encounter with Christ, Paul BELIEVED he was living his purpose, and he lived it to the fullest. He gave it all he had.

Then, one day as Paul was living the life he believed he was created to live, God poked a hole through his reality, collided with him on a dusty road to Damascus, and the trajectory of Paul's life changed. A new chapter started. And again, he gave it all he had.

He worked through his past and didn’t allow it to stop him from starting over. He went from being a “judger of souls” to a “proclaimer of life”. But in both vocations, he was a skilled teacher, an avid student (always learning) and a dynamic communicator. The function of his life took on different forms as he experience different things.

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a writer; in my teens, an actress; in my twenties, a preacher. Now in my thirties, I’m a ‘wannabe’ writer (again)… But through it all, God’s plan for me is being outworked through the love I share with my nearest and dearest, and also with my haters and those indifferent to my life. The function of my brain and body may change, but the pursuit to be and show love is what we should “strain toward” in all we do. It is heaven’s call.

It can be jarring when our plans get disturbed or our paths change course. Sometimes, our lives are thrown curve balls and we find ourselves in places we never dreamed we would be. Don’t fear if the plan changes, if the road suddenly ends and a new path emerges. Functions change, skills grow and die and we learn new ones, opportunities come and go…

But if love is the plan for your life then everything could change and you’d still be on the right course.
