Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:21 (NKJV).
I love a good superhero story. Pure evil seeking to occupy, control and destroy that is overcome by the pure and the good. I read these stories constantly to my kids. I want them growing up believing that whatever type of evil they are faced with, it can always be fought back with good. The Bible says “Don't be overcome by evil…” But it can be pretty easy to be overcome. Evil, often terrifying and intimidating in its manifestation, can quickly paralyse and dissipate hope and strength. But evil is not the strongest force in the earth… it is not the most powerful, or even (if you look closely) the most prevalent. It might be the most broadcasted because it often screams long and loudly… but goodness defies evil all over the world every single day.
Evil is overcome by goodness. Goodness that declares it will not be intimated or controlled by negativity, abuse or enslavement. Goodness that steps out in grace, that embraces with truth and shines with hope. When faced with evil, whether on the news, at work, at school, or even in your home and in your life… look straight back at it with goodness shining in your eyes and working out in your actions. I think the verses preceding this speak loud and clear: “Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,”says the Lord. Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.”
Lets overcome evil with overwhelming goodness.
