Out of the Way Places – Digital Sabbath Series

For one day over the weekend, we turn off all our devices – phones, computers, tablets – we ignore our emails and messages, the to-do list and expectations, and we rest. For those who have trouble with the word “rest,” you might like to call it “recovery” instead.

Think of it as a time to put back into your body and spirit all the energy it has spent during the last week.

It’s a day to think and pray, to get lost in the beauty all around us and the wonder of life, and breathe.

Last year, I downloaded an App called “Moment” which measures the amount of time you spend on your phone, and which apps you spend the most time on. I was absolutely floored at how much time I spent on my phone. Some days, it registered well over four hours of me with my head in a screen. At one point, my son would say to me, “mum put your phone down and look at me” before he would go on and tell me about this and that, or show me his latest Lego creation, or ask for a hug.

Now, I’m not into shaming, and I’m not trying to shame us into less Social Media time. BUT, I do love balance. And finding the balance between healthy and unhealthy screen time can be a challenge. So take a day.

Take a day without it and see what happens.

And while you have a digital Sabbath, try and take a work one, too. I know you’ve probably got lots of important work things to do. But you have some important soul things to get done, also.

Luke 5:16 (MSG) says:

As often as possible Jesus withdrew to out of the way places for prayer.

As often as possible… Where are your out of the way places? For me, it’s the beach, the couch with a book, the movies with my love, frozen yogurt with my kids, the carpet with legos and my son, a doll's house with my daughter, a walk around the lake, my yoga mat by myself. And prayer? Is just being awake, aware, and alive to The Divine in you, through you, and around you. So… what wakes you up?

Take the time. Find what works. REST.

And enjoy it.
