Your righteousness is like the highest mountains, your justice like the great deep. You, Lord, preserve both people and animals. Psalm 36:6 (NIV)
Oceans Deep
The righteousness David is describing here is something that belongs to God. He’s not talking about our righteousness, or ability to live right, or be right standing… He’s describing righteousness that God is. He is righteous in and of himself. It’s part of His DNA. He is right, He is justice, He is truth.
Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world (above sea level). When you look at pictures of it, I doubt anyone thinks “how can I move that mountain or diminish it… make it smaller.” It is incredible and majestic sight and many desire to climb and conquer its peaks. And while some have reached its summit and descended successfully down, it is a treacherous, dangerous and life threatening climb.
To try and live righteous in and of ourselves, to try and climb to its heights and stability in our own strength is a dangerous and soul threatening journey. The righteousness of God is not to be conquered or climbed by us, it’s not a competition… or a challenge. It is a gift.
We receive the righteousness of God through no doing of our own, and we keep this gift regardless of the condition of our lives. We have within us an Everest. A strength and majesty that is not man-made or built, but established by the Creator of the universe. It cannot and will not be moved.
I read on a website this week, which was the inspiration for this little series, that to-date we have explored less than 5% off the ocean.
“Much remains to be learned from exploring the mysteries of the deep. The ocean is the lifeblood of earth, covering more than 70 percent of the planet's surface, driving weather, regulating temperature, and ultimately supporting all living organisms. Throughout history, the ocean has been a vital source of sustenance, transport, commerce, growth, and inspiration. Yet for all of our reliance on the ocean, 95 percent of this realm remains unexplored, unseen by human eyes.” (www.oceanservice.noaa.gov).
So if we think of the God's justice in terms of the ocean… there is much yet to be understood and seen by human eyes. God's justice is the lifeblood of our spirits and exists in the space between us more than we know. And ultimately His justice looks like atonement, sacrifice, redemption, healing and love… as vast as the ocean deep.
