Oceans Deep - Pocket Fuel Daily Devotional on Isa 40:12

Who else has held the oceans in his hand? Isa 40:12 (NLT)

The East Coast of Australia is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. We might be biased, but our local beach, Soldier's, is definitely one of them. I love to sit on the hill that overlooks the surf break and watch the waves roll in from the oceans deep. Jesse (husband) loves to dive in and ride the waves on his surfboard. On a calm day it's serene and beautiful; on a stormy day, the water swirls and rages and crashes onto the shore with such power and ferocity…

There’s something about water… Genesis says that it was there in the beginning before God created anything; he hovered over it. Then, as he created, he separated the waters into the waters of the earth and the waters of the heavens. Water has always been a picture of life. We are held in water within our mother's wombs. We drink it, filling our bodies with life. We wash in it, cleansing and cleaning away the dirt, dust and decay that sticks to our skin from our living. We baptise in it, we play in it, it grows food, fosters energy… this clear liquid carries the essence of life.

Even though I know the oceans can be fierce and dangerous, it has a calming effect on my mind and body. The salt water cleanses wounds within both my heart and flesh.

God, who has no equal (which is the title of Isaiah 40), holds the unpredictable, beautiful, compelling oceans in his hands. He created it, eternity is threaded through it, and his presence can be felt within it. They are an extension, or even an expression of himself, electric with his life.

He is Lord of all the earth, great and mighty, mysterious and awesome… He is the beginning, the original power, the source of life.

Isaiah 40 begs the question “who or what is greater than God.” To which the answer is, nothing and no-one.

This ‘greater’ does not just include the idea of strong and powerful, but also mysterious, enduring, wise, deep… too great to be known or measured. A greatness that can only be approached and embraced by faith.

The chapter concludes with,

“He’s Creator of all you can see or imagine. He doesn’t get tired out. And he knows everything, inside and out. He energizes those who get tired, gives fresh strength to dropouts. For even young people tire and drop out, young folk in their prime stumble and fall. But those who wait upon God get fresh strength. They spread their wings and soar like eagles, they run and don’t get tired, they walk and don’t lag behind.”

He doesn’t vanquish us with his power, dominate us with his might or confuse us with his wisdom. Rather, he injects us (and all of creation) with strength, fills us with hope and compels us forward in this crazy, messy, beautiful life, holding all things together.

The one who holds the oceans and allows them to kiss the earth with its seasons, colours and temperatures, holds us through it all, covers us with love and empowers us to continue on.
