Sometimes it's easier to believe that Spiderman exists than it is to believe that breakthrough will ever happen in certain situations and areas in our lives and those around us. Fantastical ideas and lofty dreams can seem more attainable that the very personal wants and dreams of our souls. Will I ever be healed, will I ever see change, will I ever achieve that goal, fulfil that purpose, be able to speak to that person… The list of the seemingly impossible and unlikely can go on and on and on.
As a child, I used to visualise this verse and imagine what it would be like to see a real mountain – imagine ‘the White cliffs of Dover, or ‘the Three Sisters’ (mountains in NSW) – break away from the land and fall into the sea… Crazy, right? Impossible, right? Jesus says that even faith as small as a mustard seed, that only has the beginnings of vision, hope and possibility, can see mountains moved.
What good would it be if we focused on moving physical mountains, and not the mountains of impossibility that have taken up residence in our own lives? The mountains piled high with rejection, disappointment, hurt, doubt, low self esteem, failure, misperceptions, lack of detail and information, broken relationships… And on and on and on… I know what it’s like to live under the shadow of the mountain of impossibility, just wanting to be able to see over the top of the mountain and down to the other side.
But we were not created to live under the shadow of impossibility – it’s just a shadow anyway… It’s not real. What is real and true is that faith in Jesus – hope beyond what we can see coupled with the same power that raised Christ from the dead and now dwells within us – can see even the tallest and rockiest of mountains in our hearts and lives ruled over, crossed over and flattened. With God, all things are possible – all things!
Say to that mountain of impossibility in your life today “love is on the way”. Plant that mustard seed right in front of it and let hope arise.
