Look for Goodness - Pocket Fuel on Romans 12:21

Don’t let evil get the best of you; get the best of evil by doing good. Romans 12:21 (MSG)

Hey you guys, as we head into the weekend, I want to remind us all that there is GOODNESS everywhere. While much of what we see on the news and read on the internet has a negative, scandalous, gossipy, harrowing taste to it, directing us to fear and worry and hurried-unthought action, THERE IS STILL SO MUCH GOOD. We just have to look for it.

So look for it. Expect it. Invite goodness into your life by sowing it into your world.

John Lennon said, “The more I see, the less I know.” I have to agree with him.

The more I see suffering and goodness sitting side-by-side in this world, the more I feel less sure about my assumptions on right and wrong, wealth and security, faith and love. But that shouldn’t stop me from keeping my eyes open.

Oh yes, it's tempting to shut them to confusion and pain, to become even more blind to those in need, and to the corruption that fills the world. But blindness is indiscriminate: if I shut my eyes to pain, I also shut them to joy and delight. I help no one, least of all myself, by being in the dark.

I think this is part of what Jesus meant when he told his friends that they were the “light of the world” (Matt 5). Yeah, I know… shining and all that jazz. But a city on a hill is not only a beacon, it also has full view of everything happening around it. And when you hide your light, you’re actually hiding yourself away, rather than looking into all the spaces illuminated by the life you live and the path you walk. Don’t hide. Stare the world and all of its horror and all of its glory full in the face. There’s grace for that tension, for that view.

And if you find yourself overwhelmed with the grief and the suffering and the crazy and the absurd and the greedy and the corrupt stuff going on all around you, look for the good. Look for the person who is kind. Look for the person who is listening. Look for those who are helping, feeding, comforting, laughing, praying, dancing… and join in.

And if you honestly can’t find anyone? Then, do what you can with what you have. “Don’t let evil get the best of you; get the best of evil by doing good.” (Rom 12:21).

I see the world being slowly transformed into a wilderness; I hear the approaching thunder that, one day, will destroy us too. I feel the suffering of millions. And yet, when I look up at the sky, I somehow feel that everything will change for the better, that this cruelty too shall end, that peace and tranquility will return once more.
