For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, it will not tarry. Hab 2:3 (NKJV)

Long Wait

Waiting is a tough gig.

I once waited for an appointment at a Doctors Office for 2.5 hrs with an 18 month old with me. It was cold, my baby was bored, the atmosphere was impatient, I got hungry, the baby got hungry, the baby started screaming… (I felt like screaming too). My 2.5 hour long wait felt like it went for days! And it was just a tiny taste of what many of us go through during whole seasons of ‘waiting’…

God had told Habakkuk that Isreal would again be conquered and exiled to a foreign country, this time to Babylon. Habakkuk responds with anger and asks God, “why and for how long?”

Have you ever asked God those questions?

How long will I be afflicted with this illness? How long will my heart feel this way? How long will the anger rage through my body? How long until my questions are answered? How long until I get the job I was born for? How long until the dream comes to pass? Until my hopes are realised? Until my need is fulfilled? Until the tears stop? Until the sun rises? Until the fear turns to courage?

Why do we face these harrowing circumstances that make the heart sick and the body weak? That cause us to question God and the meaning of our existence?

But maybe the question is the point… our varied experiences and the tension between our highs and lows; that thin thread of certainty that gets blown about the winds of change and spontaneous hurdles – maybe they help us dig deeper, live with purpose, cultivate hope, find God…

God told Habakkuk that he was to write the vision (the hope of deliverance) down, making it plain and clear. Clear enough so that those running by it could easily read and understand it. WHY? Because living is waiting. Each day brings a new set of circumstances, new challenges, new mercies. And each time a dream is fulfilled, it is replaced with another far off hope… and the waiting continues.

Don’t lose hope along the way. Gold is formed within the tension. And although the fulfilment of God's promises may be for another day, we can be sure that they will come. They come as we wait. They grow and mature and deepen as we keep our eyes focused and hearts searching for God in whatever moment we find ourselves in.

It’s the journey that makes the destination beautiful and gives depth and meaning to a promise fulfilled.

Though it tarries, though hope is but a speck on the horizon, wait for it. Keep your head up. Allow the waiting to drive you not drown you.
