In him was life, and that life was the light for all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:5 (MSG)
Light Shines in the Darkness – Advent 2017 Series – Week 2 – Part 7
Christmas is my favourite time of the year. I enjoy the traditions which surround the holiday – the carols, holiday lights, church advent rhythms, shared meals with friends, time with family, sharing gifts with loved ones – all add to the richness of the season.
I also like to spend the lead-up to Christmas reading and reflecting on the opening chapters of the Gospels. The nativity stories in Matthew and Luke always fill me with both wonder and joy as I imagine what it would have been like to be present for the birth of our Lord. This year I have been particularly thinking about the opening verses from the book of John. “In him was life, and that life was the light for all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
It is such vivid imagery of what the birth of Christ meant to the world…imagery that resonates with the work of TEAR’s partners who are shining the light and life of Christ into some of the darkest places on earth. As we light candles during this holiday season – they remind me to celebrate that His light continues to shine into the darkness of the world, and the darkness will not overcome it.
