Part 2 – Know It All

Go to PART 1

My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ. – Col 2:2 NIV

It's in unity that the extent of God's richness can begin to be seen by the human heart and eye. When you try to see God through eyes of division, or hatred, or greed, or pride… your view will only ever be murky and muddy at best.

In John 14, Jesus is telling the disciples what's about to happen. He says,

“I go to prepare a place for you to rest. And when everything is ready, I will come back and take you into me so that you will be where I am. And you already know the way to the place where I’m going” Thomas said to him, “Master, we don’t know where you’re going, so how could we know the way there?” Jesus explained, “I am the way, I am the truth, and I am the life. No one comes next to the Father except through union with me…” John 14 (The Passion Translation).

The way to God is through Jesus. To know Jesus is to see God. This mysterious, powerful, divine God who holds the world in place with his being, who breathes life into dust… this entity and force that we cannot describe adequately with words, or paint brilliantly enough with colour, or sing his form into plain sight through song, this God can begin to be seen through Christ. And we see Christ when we discover his love and engage in it. It is the heartbeat of all that is. The way is not perfection, the truth cannot be found in theological textbooks, and life cannot be contained in a formula. The problem with approaching God with A + B = C formula is that A and B are all kinds of different things for all kinds of different people. What is your truth, the way that you found God, the way you have lived your life is not identical to any one person who has ever been or will be on the planet.

The one thing that remains the same is the love of God towards us. The way we begin to see it woven through our lives is through Christ, and to know Christ is to know love. Or begin to anyway. When we begin to see just how connected we all are, we begin to see God in places we never thought possible. We see him at work behind the scenes. People and their stories become important, not just their dogma and current position in the world.

With all the references in scripture to God being mysterious, it's interesting that we try so hard to pin him down, define and understand him in our own humanity. I’m discovering that it’s much more freeing to walk the journey of discovery. To let go of trying to KNOW everything right now and be an eternal student. Be someone who looks into the nooks and crannies of this world for God. I’m trying to unite with my neighbours and I’m learning that we don’t need to look the same, read the same books, vote for the same party, have the same level of education, got to the same church or even believe in the same God to be experienced the kind of unity that best displays Jesus. God’s love for us unites us. And if I know God loves me and my neighbour, then whether or not my neighbour is aware of God's love, I know that we are connected in some mysterious way.

Don’t be afraid of mystery… embrace it, enjoy it. Make it your grand adventure in life to travel down the road of encouragement, love and unity that leads us to Christ and unveils God, one divine day at a time.
