Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends. Rev 3:20 (NLT)
This scripture comes from a message that God was sending the Church at Laodicea. This church seemingly had wealth and prominence, but on the inside was “wretched & miserable” (Rev 3:17). God also said to them in v15-16 “I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth!” Their indifferent heart and complacency towards the things of God was corrupting them from the inside out – Keeping God and His power at bay, locked outside of their situation. With my imagination, I see people sitting inside a beautiful house, talking of their accomplishments and conquests, when up to the front door walks The King and knocks. Because they think they have true wealth, and are so preoccupied with it, they don’t even hear the ‘knock knock' at the door… They keep the King outside, unaware of His grandeur and ignorant of His lavish and rich love.
It’s so easy to become so enamoured with your own situation – good or bad – and lose the ability to hear and see above and beyond it. The ‘lukewarm’ that is mentioned here in Revelation (there is so much commentary you can read on this account) refers to a sense of indifference, ignorance – not in the sense of not knowing, but having once known and no longer caring. Whatever is going on in your life today – maybe the noise of disappointment is deafening, or the sight of your success is so bright it’s blinding – never allow yourself to be indifferent to the ‘knock knock’ of Jesus upon your heart. He’s not trying to get your attention to bring you down… He wants to ‘share’ with you… Eat with you… And enter into your life as Saviour and friend.
Keep your ears to the ground and your eyes always watching for Him. He is constantly speaking to you, always sending you His love and grace, and always knocking, bringing new words, plans, and hope into your life. Open that door today friends…
